Radboudumc DRE newsletter - July 2024

Dear Radboudumc DRE user,

It's been a while since we issued a DRE newsletter, but a lot has changed in the meantime. Many users have probably already noticed these changes in the past few months while using the DRE, we will list the most important changes for you in this newletter.

Happy reading!

New and improved virtual machine templates

Working with your favorite software has never been so easy! We have created three new templates that can be used in Radboudumc workspaces to quickly set up your virtual machines:
  1. Windows-RUMC-Base 2.0.0
  2. Windows-RUMC-Atlasti 1.0.0
  3. Windows-RUMC-RPython 1.0.0
These templates are set up in such a way that you only need to set up external access in your workspace to be able to use the software. How to do this is explained in the articles, so check it out!

N.B.: in earlier communications, we also spoke of a Matlab template being created. This template will become available after the summer holiday.
Still working on an old machine created several years ago? You may run into issues when trying to work with certain software. Just like with regular hardware, it is important to replace your virtual machine every few years. These new templates should make this process much easier!

Domain allowlisting self-service

In late November last year, anDREa launched domain-allowlisting as a self-service feature. This form of allowing selective internet access offers faster and more flexible access to package repositories, websites and other services that require a connection to the outside, compared to the old IP-based method. You can find the feature in your workspace under External Access. Note that IP-allowlisting is also still available, this is necessary for some software to function (e.g., Atlas.ti).

This list provides the domains that need to be allowlisted for known applications and services. If your software or service is not listed, and if it does not function without an internet connection, please contact myDRE support to figure out which domains need to be allowlisted.

[Added 2024-08-19:] IP-allowlisting rules cannot be removed by members of a workspace. However, they may get in the way when trying to get domain allowlisting to work, because disabled rules actually block access to the specified IP address. Please contact Radboudumc support via a ticket if you would like to have your IP-allowlisting rules removed.

New look-and-feel and self-service functionalities

For those who haven't logged into the DRE for a while, the portal will look very different. The major facelift was done in March 2023, and minor updates have been added over the past year, including an Activity Feed, improved file uploads, and embedded links to relevant support articles.

Some new self-service functionalities have also been added, such as creating your own virtual machine templates ('Generalizing'), changing user roles, and the domain-allowlisting feature mentioned above.

Go check out the new and improved DRE today!
