Using the Radboudumc Software Installer

Using the Radboudumc Software Installer

The Radboudumc Software Installer is based on a program named Chocolatey and is or can be made available on all Window virtual machines in Radboudumc workspaces. The Installer is pre-installed on all templates provided by Radboudumc (Windows-RUMC-AAAA).

The Software Installer offers both licensed an unlicenced software, which can be easily installed and updated with a click of a button. For a full list of available software, see Which software is available?

Warning
If you are currently using a virtual machine that was created with an older template, please refer to the information below.

I used the Windows-RUMC-Base\1.0.0 template to create my machine, but the Software Installer only shows red crosses

Unfortunately, the first version of the RUMC-Base template still requires you to manually change a setting before you can start using the software installer. This ia a one-time action, but should be done by each individual (admin) user of a virtual machine. Follow these steps:
  1. Go to Settings >> Network & Internet >> Proxy on your virtual machine (see screenshot below)
  2. In the box where you see the IP address 169.254.169.254, make sure it contains the following (separated by semicolons):
            filerepositorychntiwhy.blob.core.windows.net
  1. Save and close the window

How do I install the Software Installer on my machine created with the old Windows-RUMC\1.0.3 template?

Warning
You need to be at least an Advanced Member of a workspace for the following process.

For our Radboudumc workspaces, a check is performed every 15 minutes to see which virtual machines are turned on. If your virtual machine is running during this check, a small installer is placed on your desktop (only once per machine). This also works for newly created machines.
To install the Radboudumc Software Installer, simply double-click the small installer on your desktop once it has been placed there.

Alert
Note: the process may take up to 30 minutes and you will be disconnected from the machine halfway.
  1. You will be asked if you allow Powershell to make changes, choose Ok
  2. Powershell will start preparations and will ask if you want to continue with the installation, type y (Enter not required).
  3. Chocolatey will be installed, along with several additional packages. The output will include some error messages, this is completely normal.
  4. After several minutes, you will be asked if the machine can be rebooted. Type y (again, no Enter required), you will be disconnected from the machine.
  5. Wait 1-2 minutes and re-connect with the machine. Powershell will start up again and will continue with further installation steps.
If the installation process is not finished within 15 minutes after the reboot, close Powershell and run the Install Package Manager program again from your desktop. This will make you go through the steps mentioned above again (including reboot), but this process will be much faster. Once Chocolatey has finished installing, you will find a new shortcut on your desktop and in the Start menu, this will open the new Application Installer.
