Virtual machine Public IP Upgrade: see how this affects you

Virtual machine Public IP Upgrade: see how this affects you

We have successfully configured changes to VM connectivity to align with Microsoft’s retirement of Basic SKU public IPs on September 30. Most VMs have lost their public IP; this is organisation dependent.

Why the upgrade?

All myDRE Windows VMs have been upgraded to Standard SKU public IPs to avoid service disruptions, as required by Microsoft after September 30th, 2025. This will result in increased Azure consumption costs.  Please reach out to your local Research Support to understand what this increase in Azure consumption will mean for you via support.mydre.org.

If you see on the VM card: Private IP
  1. You VM does not have Public IP,  your VM is not incurring additional Azure consumption costs. Use Azure Bastion to connect to VMs and use domain allowlisting for external access.

If you see on the VM card: Public IP

  1. This means you have a Public IP and you can also use RDP download to connect to VM via local client and use IP-Allowlisting.
  2. Keep in mind this will generate additional Azure consumption costs
  3. If VM not used, please delete it.

Info
Did you know? Many applications can use in addition to IP allowlisting also domain allowlisting? The known application that work with domain allowlisting can be found here

If you have any questions please contact your local Research support on support.mydre.org.
