FAIR and myDRE

Introduction

In 2016, the ‘FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship’ were published in Scientific Data. The authors intended to provide guidelines to improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets. The principles emphasise machine-actionability (i.e., the capacity of computational systems to find, access, interoperate, and reuse data with none or minimal human intervention) because humans increasingly rely on computational support to deal with data as a result of the increase in volume, complexity, and creation speed of data. source: https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/

The myDRE Workspaces provide a safe (collaboration) environment to receive, store, and process datamyDRE Workspaces cannot be used to host data, to be a data source, that can be accessed by non-authorized people. Authorised means invited to the Workspace. It is quite doable to set up outbound internet access to specific fixed IP addresses (and soon also domains and URLs), inbound access is not allowed. It is possible to upload data using anDREa's DLZ-API (Data Landing Zone) to a specific Workspace.

A myDRE Workspace is primarily designed to work with and process data; hence Workspace. The Workspace can be used to:
  1. to make data FAIR
  2. to receive FAIR data

What does this mean in terms of FAIR?

  1. From within a Workspace, it is possible to access external (data) sources
    1. If the external (data) source has an API to read, the data can be programmatically read/ingressed
      1. Examples CBS OpenData, ROR, CASTOR
    2. If the external (data) source has an API to write, the data can be programmatically written/egressed
      1. Examples CEDAR, CASTOR
  2. From an external source, it is possible to push requested data to a specific Workspace
    1. Using the DLZ-API, which requires an exchange of keys to ensure only authorized people can upload to the Workspace
  3. A FAIR (or any other required) expert can be invited to a Workspace to help out
  4. A Workspace can be used to make data FAIR
    1. For instance, the NFU Workgroup for COVID-19 data used Workspaces to transform the local data into a uniform data format that is uploaded into a central DataHub.
  5. A Workspace can be used as a closed FAIR DataPoint to a specific and limited number of people (dozens yes, hundreds no)
  6. A Workspace cannot be used as a public accessible FAIR DataPoint
