Cost analysis export

Introduction

As an organization that is customer of anDREa, you would like to have access to the costs that are generated by the resources (VMs, OSDisks etc.) in your subscription. The Cost analysis tab is available in the Azure Portal for tenant-mandated employees. It is fairly simple to export subscription-wide costs to a .csv or Excel file. However, you would still need to manually split these costs in resources. Microsoft Azure now offers an overview per resource group and even per resource. Below you can find an explanation on where to find this overview.

Cost analysis

Be aware that the costs per resource overview is an Azure preview function. These may disappear or be changed.

1. Log in to the Azure Portal. You're most likely in the role of support member, so you will need to log in with your organizational account, not your @mydre.org account!
2. In the Azure Portal, navigate to Subscriptions.
   
3. Select your tenant-owned subscription.
   
4. In the left menu, navigate to Cost Analysis.
   

1. At the top, select Cost by resource followed by Resources (preview).
   

1. At the top you can select the months and the view (Resources, Resource groups, Subscriptions etc.). The most handy overview for billing would be resources or resource groups. The resources overview also includes tags such as cost center.
   

1. At the top select download to download an export in .csv or Excel for internal billing within the own organization.

The export can also be automated to a workspace storage account, for instance monthly costs can be exported to the storage account of choice. Your institution must have shared subscription in place in order for this to work.

Understand Cost Management data

When cost and usage data becomes available in Cost Management, it gets retained for at least seven years. Only the last 13 months are available from the Azure portal under Cost Management portal under Exports. It's also available in the Cost Details API. To retrieve historical data that is older than 13 months, use the Exports REST API.

This is a suggestion for your internal planning: consider running a script every six months to update Cost Management, especially if you're looking for data beyond the past 13 months.
