Changing VM names

Changing VM names

Introduction

This feature is available to Workspace Accountables and Privileged Members.
The friendly name is cosmetic and for ease of use in mydre.org.
The real machine name or machine IP must be used in applications, the friendly name will not work.

Virtual Machines (VMs) require unique names. Unfortunately, this means that VMs start out with difficult names that do mean a lot in Microsoft Azure terms but not for the user.  Fortunately, you can cosmetically rename your VMs to your own liking. You can change the names of the VMs to reflect whom should be using them, or what applications/setting the VM is for. On the Microsoft Azure backend, it will have the difficult and unique name, but for you as user it will have a friendly name.

How to rename a VM?

  1. Enter the Workspace by clicking anywhere on the Workspace tile.

  1. Click on the three dots menu of the VM of which you want to change the name and select Rename.

  1. A pop-up will appear in which you can type the new and friendly name for your VM. Click on Update to save the new name.

  1. The VM will now display the new and friendly name.

  1. In case you want to revert back to the original name: select the three dot menu > Rename. In the pop-up there is a button Reset to original. Simply click that button and click on Update to revert to the original VM name.
